Girl with Balloon (There is Always Hope) is one of the most recognisable works of graffiti in the world, and one that has been reproduced in different places and different contexts over the last two decades. The stencil first appeared on the the stairs of Waterloo Bridge in London in 2002, but it was later painted over by the city. In the image, a young girl extends her hand towards a red heart-shaped balloon, which appears to be drifting just out of her reach. The balloon is a symbol of hope, dreams and innocence, and depending on whether you see the child losing the balloon, or about to catch it, the scene can be interpreted as loss of innocence or the dawn of new hope.
